Heating Systems in Ireland - WD Heating & Plumbing
Heating systems in Ireland have developed rapidly over the past two decades, mainly due to the move away from fossil fuels and a move to more environmentally friendly methods. This is especially true for homes built after 2006. During this period new legislation was developed which stipulated new approaches to heating that developments should take.
At WD Heating and Plumbing we have followed these development’s and worked on many homes and businesses old and new which have required replacement heating systems or upgrades and changes.
But following such changes can be tricky, so we have compiled a list of some of the most common heating systems in Ireland and what they mean for you, the environment, and your pocket.
The most widely used source of home heating in Ireland is still the boiler. These can be either Gas or Oil boilers. There are three types of boiler’s commonly found in Ireland. These are
These work at about 90% efficiency as they also use the water vapours and moisture that is typically lost as exhaust fumes. Combi boilers are more costly to install than other boilers due to their complexity but will save you money over time due to their better-quality heat production and retention.
Combi boilers are more traditionally heated by Gas. They work by heating water directly from your mains and providing heated water throughout your home.
It’s important to remember that larger combi units will not affect your water pressure. As they simply use the pressure in your existing network. Combi boilers do eliminate the need for water storage units which is great for small homes and apartments.
These are found in older homes with an existing heating system. These require water storage units and are part of the traditional immersion model that most of Ireland knows well.
Other Heating Methods
Other homes and water heating methods include electric boilers, furnace’s, and systems boilers. These are all less popular methods of home heating, especially electric and furnaces as they cannot provide enough heat for large homes. Furnace heaters can be found in more rural areas where access to bog and other fuels is much easier.
A heating method that has been on the rise increasingly in Ireland is the heat pump. This uses renewable energy to heat buildings and water supplies. There are a few methods including air and ground source methods to transfer heat from outside to inside your home.
There are various components to heat pumps including heat recovery ventilation systems, air to water heat pumps and more. Though environmentally friendly some units can be large and omit noise. It’s important to discuss with experts like those at WD heating and plumbing to see what methods are best for your home and business.
Solar power heating just like heat pumps has become increasingly popular in Irelands in the past number of years. Solar power can provide up to 70% of your annual water heat, reducing your costs. Though initial installation costs may be high there are huge environmental benefits from solar power.
Costs and the environmental impact:
The heating systems you choose for your home can depend on a few factors. Of course, for new homes, you can use one or a combination of the above-mentioned methods. There are grants available for installing certain types of heating systems and there are numerous environmental benefits from moving away from traditional boiler methods, especially oil.
Older units will cost money over time due to age and a weakening of heating networks. For those of you with boilers over 15 years old, it may be time to call in the professionals to examine your boiler unit and heating systems. Newer models provide better insulation and heat production saving you money in the long term.
